Baseball Matches School-Record Win Streak With Sweep of Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College baseball team stayed red-hot, matching their longest win streak in seven years with a doubleheader sweep of Williams on Sunday.

The Polar Bears claimed game one, 4-1, before taking game two, 3-2. Bowdoin (20-9) reaches 20 wins for the fifth consecutive season and matches the school-record winning streak of 11 set in 2006. The Ephs drop to 10-18 with the three-game sweep at the hands of Bowdoin this weekend.

Bowdoin scored single runs in the second inning and third innings to take a 2-0 lead in the opener. A ground-ball double play scored Aaron Rosen in the second frame before an RBI single by Erik Jacobsen plated John Lefeber in the third to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Williams scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third, trimming the lead to 2-1. But Dan Findley rapped a run-scoring single in the sixth to score Sam Canales and Luke Regan brought home Rosen in the seventh to give the Polar Bears a 4-1 lead.

That would be enough for the Bowdoin pitching staff, who held Williams to five hits on the day. Harry Ridge garnered the victory with five innings of strong relief, allowing just two hits and no runs. Rosen went 4-4 with two runs scored to lead the Bowdoin offense. Lefeber and Jacobsen had two hits each.

The Polar Bears took a 3-0 lead in the opening innings of game two, with Tim McGarry scoring Lefeber on a run-scoring groundout in the first to start the scoring. Findley scored on a bunt by Kyle LeBlanc in the fifth and Rosen's outstanding day continued with a run-scoring single in the sixth to bring home McGarry.

Henry Van Zant cruised through the first five innings before running into some trouble in the sixth frame, when the Ephs scored twice to cut the lead to 3-2. Kevin McDonough, Erik Jacobsen and David Zabinsky closed the door in relief, permitting just one hit over the final three frames to seal the win. Van Zant got credit for the victory by scattering eight hits over six innings with four strikeouts. Lefeber had two more hits in the game two win for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears will return to action Wednesday afternoon with a game against Brandeis scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
