WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior Ollie Koo scored just 43 seconds into the game as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team never trailed in a 3-1 win over Colby Friday night at Alfond Rink.
Bowdoin (1-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 NESCAC) and Colby (1-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 NESCAC) will play again Saturday at 7 p.m. in Brunswick. The win moved Polar Bear head coach Terry Meagher to 499 career victories in advance of Saturday's clash. The Polar Bears hold a 106-87-8 edge in the oldest Division III hockey series and have claimed eight of the last nine meetings between the teams.
Before many of the sold-out crowd at Alfond Rink had taken their seats, Koo put the Polar Bears up 1-0. Colin Downey took a long pass from Joseph Lace and beat a defender on the right side. His cross to Koo coming in hard was one-timed into the net.
The Polar Bears scored another quick goal to go up 2-0 after tallying just 10 seconds into their first and only power play opportunity. Senior defender Jay Livermore took a perfectly-placed cross-ice feed from John McGinnis and deposited it into the back of the cage.
Colby cut into the Bowdoin lead thanks to first-year Geoff Sullivan, who had his first collegiate goal. Sullivan took a pass from Brendan Cosgrove at mid-ice. Sullivan got outside, beat a defender to the goal, and knocked in a backhand from in front of the net.
With Colby putting pressure on in the third period, Bowdoin clinched the victory with a transition goal. Downey got the puck to Harry Matheson for a two-on-one chance. With a Colby defender sliding to the goal, Matheson ripped a shot that caught the top-right corner of the goal to seal the victory.
Max Fenkell stopped 31 shots in goal for the Polar Bears, while Sam Parker also played well with 30 saves for Colby.
