Box Score GORHAM, Maine - Senior Brooke Phinney scored a pair of goals to lead a high-powered Bowdoin offense to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win is the fourth straight for the Polar Bears who improve to 4-0 overall. The Polar Bears are ranked fifth nationally in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches' Association (NFHCA) Poll. The loss is the second straight for USM and drops its record to 4-3.
Bowdoin took command of the game from the start scoring in the second minute. First-year Rachel Kennedy slotted home her fourth goal of the season on an assist from junior Katie Riley. Bowdoin tacked on five more goals, including Phinney's pair, and got single tallies from Cathleen Smith, Pam Herter and Emily Simonton to take a commanding 6-0 lead at the break. The Polar Bears scored their seventh and final goal of the game midway through the second half as freshman Beth Findley notched her first collegiate goal.
Polar Bear senior goalkeeper Kayla Lessard picked up the shutout victory. Despite being seldom challenged in the game, Lessard came up big with a pair of sprawling saves to preserve the shutout.
Bowdoin outshot the Huskies 23-4 and held a 14-4 advantage in corners. The Polar Bears will travel to Middlebury College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC game. Middlebury is ranked third in the latest NFHCA poll.
