Southern Maine Tops Bowdoin in High-Scoring Baseball Game Thursday

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College and University of Southern Maine combined for 22 runs, 36 hits and 11 errors in a wild 13-9 win for the Huskies in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at Pickard Field.

The Huskies win their fifth staight game and improve to 21-16. Bowdoin falls to 21-15 with the setback.

Tied at 3-3 after four frames, both teams posted five-run fifth innings before the Huskies added a pair of two-run innings in the sixth and seventh to pull away for the victory. John Carey led the way for the Huskies with a 4-5 game while Forrest Chadwick had three hits and three runs scored. John Lefeber had three hits and two RBI for the Polar Bears, who also got three hits from Jordan Edgett.

Nathan Veilleux got the win in relief for the Huskies by tossing three innings and allowing no earned runs. Oliver Van Zant took the loss for the Polar Bears by permitting ten runs (four earned) over six innings pitched with eight strikeouts.

Southern Maine's big five-run fifth frame was aided by a pair of Bowdoin errors with the big blow coming on a Nick Grady two-run single to left. The cutoff throw to the plate hit a USM player and bounced out of play, allowing all runners to score. Carey later doubled home Chadwick to give the visitors an 8-3 lead.

Bowdoin took advantage of two Husky errors in the bottom of the inning to rally to tie the score. Erik Jacobsen ripped a run-scoring double to spark the rally that also included run-scoring hits by Kyle LeBlanc and Edgett as well as a sac fly from Lefeber.

The Huskies pulled ahead for good in the sixth when Tucker White singled home Matt Powers. Bowdoin appeared to have USM's Jake Glauser caught in a rundown, but a wild throw sailed out of play and allowed him to score to give USM a 10-8 edge. Lefeber trimmed the lead to 10-9 in the bottom of the inning when he singled home Buddy Shea, but the Huskies answered again with two unearned runs in the seventh. Matt Verrier added an insurance run via a sac fly in the ninth to seal the win.

Southern Maine is scheduled to play a home doubleheader against Little East foe Eastern Connecticut beginning at noon on Friday. The Polar Bears will play a non-division doubleheader at Middlebury on Saturday at noon.
