SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The stellar season of the Bowdoin College men's lacrosse team came to an end Saturday in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as Union took a 10-4 victory over the Polar Bears.

With the win, the Dutchmen (13-4) advance to the Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Bowdoin finished 14-6, and the game marked the end of a 22 year coaching career for head coach Tom McCabe, who retires with 229 career victories to rank 15th all-time in Division III history.

Senior attack Ted McKenna scored three goals and senior goaltender Sean Aaron made eight saves to lead the Dutchmen. Rob Santangelo and Nate Greenberg scored two goals each for Union, who had a 34-20 shot advantage, and also a 35-21 edge in ground balls. Union won 13 of the 18 face offs on the day. All three of McKenna's goals came in the fourth quarter, when Union outscored Bowdoin, 4-1.

In a tight defensive contest, the Dutchmen and Polar Bears traded goals in the opening quarter. Bowdoin's Dan Hanley gave the visiting team the lead at 9:14 of the opening quarter, but sophomore attack Nate Greenberg answered with a wide angle shot to tie the game with 3:58 to go in the quarter.

Bowdoin's Franklin Reis answered with a nice move to create space in front of net, scoring with 1:47 to go to give Bowdoin the lead.

The Dutchmen answered right back on sophomore attack Rob Santangelo's goal with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter to knot the game at 2-2.

Union scored twice in just over a minute of play early in the second quarter to give the home team a two goal edge heading into the break. Senior midfielder Ethan Meyer scored a man-up goal with a diving shot across the front of the net to put Union up 3-2 at the 5:11 mark. Junior attack Nolan Connors scored at 6:15, beating his man behind the net for the goal to give Union a 4-2 lead.

Nate Greenberg gave Union a 5-2 lead with 5:45 left in the third but Bowdoin's Christopher Anderson scored a close angle shot with 2:31 left in the third to pull the Polar Bears to within two again. Rob Santangelo converted an excellent possession with just 15 seconds left in the third stanza, giving the Dutchmen a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth period.
