Bowdoin, Wesleyan Split Low-Scoring Doubleheader To Open Northern Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Wesleyan baseball teams split a pair of pitcher's duels on Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field. The Cardinals took game one in seven innings by a 2-1 score while the Polar Bears claimed the nine-inning nightcap, 1-0.

Bowdoin moves to 11-7 this season while Wesleyan stands at 8-9. The Polar Bears were scheduled to play at USM on Sunday afternoon but the game was canceled due to USM having to reschedule a league game against Rhode Island College. Bowdoin will return to action at home against Bates on Friday. The Cardinals will return to the diamond Tuesday afternoon at home against Elms.

In game one, Brett Yarusi (1-2) earned the win for the Cardinals by tossing six innings, allowing just three hits and no earned runs with five strikeouts. Wesleyan scored once in both the third and fourth frames, as an Andrew Yin groundout plated Sam Goodwin-Boyd in the third and a David Skura RBI single scored Joe Giaimo in the fourth to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Bowdoin's Tim McGarry reached base on an error in the sixth and came around on a passed ball and a run-scoring groundout by Dan Findley to trim the lead to 2-1. Bowdoin got the leadoff batter to reach in the bottom of the seventh, but Jeff Blout slammed the door for the Cardinals, getting the final three outs to earn the save. Goodwin-Boyd reached base twice in the win for Wesleyan while Bowdoin's Buddy Shea had a hit and two walks in the loss. Christian Martin (3-1) was tagged with his first loss on the mound after allowing two runs over six frames with five strikeouts.

Bowdoin's Oliver Van Zant and Wesleyan's Mike Barsotti put on a show in game two, as both hurlers posted impressive lines. Barsotti tossed eight innings, striking out 13 Bowdoin batters and permitting just three hits and no earned runs in a tough-luck loss. The Van Zant brothers were just as good for Bowdoin, with Oliver going six frames, permitting five hits and whiffing 10 batters in a no-decision before giving way to brother Henry, who earned his first collegiate win with three innings of relief, striking out three batters.

The Polar Bears scraped together their lone run in the bottom of the eighth, as Beau Breton led off with a single through the right side and pinch-runner Kyle LeBlanc moved to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Chris Cameron's sacrifice bunt attempt was fielded by Barsotti, who threw wide of first base, allowing LeBlanc to come around from second to score the go-ahead run.

The Cardinals put runners on first and second to open the ninth, but Van Zant rebounded with a strikeout of Alex Meadow for the first out of the frame. Van Zant then whiffed Skura and Bowdoin catcher Buddy Shea caught Giaimo attempting to steal third base to dramatically end the game.

Giaimo had three hits for the Cardinals while three different Polar Bears each had a hit.
