AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College men's ice hockey team scored twice in the third period and goaltender Jonathan La Rose stopped 37 shots to lead the Jeffs in a 3-1 win over Bowdoin on Friday.
The loss snaps Bowdoin's seven-game unbeaten streak and is the Polar Bears' first league loss since December 3. The Polar Bears (11-5-2, 8-3-2 NESCAC) will look to bounce back at Hamilton on Saturday. With the win, the Jeffs (15-3-1, 12-1-1 NESCAC) avenge loss to the Polar Bears last month and gain a stranglehold on first place in the conference with five games remaining.
In a penalty-marred first period, Amherst struck first off the stick of Aaron Deutsch on the 5x3 power play at 9:21. Bowdoin's Harry Matheson evened the score with a power play tally at 18:07. Following a scoreless second period that saw the Polar Bears hold a 15-7 advantage in shots, the hosts struck twice in the final stanza with Elliot Bostrom's first goal of the season coming at 11:12 and Mark Colp's insurance marker at 14:04.
Steve Messina stopped 20 shots for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin held a 38-23 advantage in shots for the contest.
