BRUNSWICK, Maine – Five different players scored as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of NESCAC opponents with a 5-2 win over Hamilton on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
The Polar Bears improve to 7-4-1 (5-2-1 NESCAC) while the Continentals drop to 5-5-1 (2-5-0). Bowdoin held a 39-16 edge in shots for the contest. Joe Quattrocchi stopped 34 shots in the loss for Hamilton while Richard Nerland made 14 saves for the Polar Bears. Harry Matheson (1-1), Colin Downey (1-1), John McGinnis (0-2) and Ollie Koo (0-2) had multi-point games for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin got on the board first as Jordan Lalor found Rob Toczylowski up the middle with a long pass. Toczylowski won the puck in the offensive zone, where it bounced to Lockwood who wristed a top-shelf goal at 11:30. The Continentals evened the score with a power play tally courtesy of Evan Haney who beat Richard Nerland blocker-side with a shot from the right faceoff circle. The tie was short-lived, however, as Jay Livermore ripped a blast over the shoulder of Joe Quattrocchi after the ensuing faceoff, just 15 seconds later to give the hosts a 2-1 edge after one period.
The Polar Bears increased their lead with the man advantage early in the second, as Harry Matheson banged home a loose puck in front just 90 seconds into the period. Hamilton earned a five-minute power play midway through the frame and took advantage when Anthony Scarpino knocked home a rebound at 10:17 to bring the Continentals within a goal after two periods.
The game settled into a neutral-zone battle for the next 25 minutes, until Bowdoin's Danny Palumbo gathered a loose puck at the blue line and fed it ahead to Daniel Weiniger, who slipped a shot through Quattrocchi's pads with 4:41 remaining to give the Polar Bears an important insurance goal. Colin Downey added an empty netter to seal the win for Bowdoin.
