Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Saturday to earn first place at the 2011 Midcoast Classic.
In the process, Bowdoin head coach Karen Corey earned her 100th career victory, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach the plateau, and the Polar Bears (10-1) established a new mark for the best start to a season in program history.
Bowdoin earned 3-0 wins over Bates (25-19, 25-11, 25-10) and Rivier (25-18, 25-15, 25-15) to finish the weekend 3-0 and become the fastest team to reach 10 wins in school history. In Saturday's other matches Colby Sawyer beat Rivier (25-16, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14) and Bates downed Colby-Sawyer (25-19, 25-16, 25-16).
Hillary Cederna led the way for Bowdoin against Bates, notching 10 kills and 12 digs while Kristin Hanczor had nine kills. Sophia Cornew added 30 assists. Against Rivier, Emese Gaal had a career-high 13 kills while Hanczor added 13. Cornew dished out 34 assists while Jillian Berkman added 15 digs.
Bowdoin finished the weekend 3-0, followed by Rivier, Colby-Sawyer and Bates who beat eachother once to conclude 1-2.
The All-Tournament team was comprised of Hillary Cederna (Bowdoin), Melissa Haskell (Bowdoin), Kristin Hanczor (Bowdoin), Lauren Saccoccio(Rivier), Emma Getsinger (Bates), Kristin Sawyer (Colby-Sawyer) and Ally Le-Bruno (Colby-Sawyer).
After the two wins Saturday, Corey and assistant coach Erin Summers sit at 101-66 in the midst of their sixth season together on the Bowdoin bench, easily the best stretch in program history.
