Volleyball Secures two wins in season opener at Bear Invite Saturday

ST LOUIS – The Bowdoin college volleyball team opened the season with two wins at the WashU Bears Invite on Saturday taking five sets to defeat Wheaton before a 3-1 decision over St. Olaf to finish the first day of the tournament 2-0.

Wheaton Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin needed all five sets to come away with a win over Wheaton, taking the second set 25-17, before rallying in the fourth set (25-22) and taking the fifth set convincingly in 15-8 fashion. 

  • Zoe Ryu (13), Alison Smith (12) and Skye LaMendola (11) each reached double-figure kills while Cameron Shelly paced the team with 31 assists as Molly Dunn added 12, respectively.

  • Anna Yet led the Polar Bears in digs with 14 while Smith led the way defensively with seven blocks.

St. Olaf Match Highlights

  • After dropping the first set 25-20, Bowdoin claimed the next three sets to give St. Olaf its first loss of the season (2-1).

  • Skye LaMendola had a game-high 21 kills to go with two service aces and 12 digs on defense.

  • Cameron (29) and Dunn (18) combined for 47 assists.

  • Bowdoin held advantages in blocks (10-6), aces (10-7) and assists (53-38) over St. Olaf.

  • Bowdoin will complete the Bears Invite Sunday facing host and No. 14 nationally-ranked  Washington University at 11:00 a.m.
