St. Joseph's Edges Bowdoin in Non-Conference Pitcher's Duel

BRUNSWICK, Maine - St. Joseph's starter Chad Rafferty tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Monks baseball team to a 1-0 win at Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field. The win gives St. Joseph's (30-11) thirty victories for the third consecutive season while the Polar Bears (22-13) lose despite a stellar effort from starter John Lefeber.

Rafferty (5-1) scattered eight hits for his second shutout of the season, striking out eight and walking one.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the sixth, when Todd Keneborus led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Mike Pratt. Ian Lee ripped a single down the left field line to plate Keneborus, but Bowdoin LF Joe Comizio gunned down Pratt at the plate to retain the one-run advantage. Lefeber (3-3) escaped further damage in the inning and ended after seven innings and allowing seven hits.

Bowdoin had a baserunner in every inning until the ninth but couldn't push the tying run across. The Polar Bears had an apparent run taken off the board in the third inning when a double steal resulted in an errant throw and a run coming home for Bowdoin. But the home plate umpire ruled umpire interference on the play, removing the run, and Rafferty avoided further damage in the frame.

Lee, Keneborus and Pratt had two hits apiece for the Monks while Duncan Taylor and Kyle LeBlanc had two hits each for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin will next play in the opening round of the NESCAC Tournament at Amherst on Friday at 3:00 p.m. St. Joseph's will close out their regular season with a doubleheader at Bates on Wednesday at noon.
