Bowdoin Uses Incredible Comeback to Stun 20th-Ranked MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team mounted a furious comeback and claimed the final two singles matches to seal a 5-4 victory at 20th-ranked MIT on Friday evening. The 14th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 7-2 this spring and will travel to play at fourth-ranked Amherst on Saturday.

Trailing 2-1 heading into singles play, Bowdoin received a pair of convincing wins at #1 from Stephen Sullivan and at #4 from Oscar Pena. MIT countered with a pair of straight-set victories to hold a 4-3 lead with two matches remaining.

Casey Grindon, down a set at #3 singles, won a second-set tiebreaker to force a third set where he earned a 6-4 decision to even the score. First-year Peter Davis split his first two sets as well, and trailed 5-1 in the third as Bowdoin seemed assured to drop their first match since March 15. But Davis posted an astounding rally to force a third-set tiebreak and take the match 6-0, 5-7, 7-6(3).

The Polar Bears have won six consecutive matches overall.
