Gorman's Record-Setting Performance Leads Bowdoin Over Colby

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin senior Brett Gorman tied a school record with three home runs as the Polar Bear baseball team slammed Colby 12-1 in the opener of a three-game NESCAC East Division series Friday at Pickard Field. The victory clinches a NESCAC postseason berth for Bowdoin (18-7, 6-1 NESCAC). Colby falls to 10-16 (0-7 NESCAC) with the loss.

Gorman becomes just the second Polar Bear to hit three roundtrippers in one game, tying Athletic Hall of Honor member Tom Aldrich '88, who achieved the feat twice in his career. Gorman, who also ripped a double off the wall, racked up 14 total bases to set a new school record, breaking the mark set by Aldrich in 1988 and tied a school mark with five runs scored.

Leading 1-0 in the third inning, Gorman hammered a two-run home run to dead-center field, easily clearing the 390 sign to give Bowdoin a 3-0 lead. He did it again in the third, blasting a two-run shot to left-center field. The co-captain closed out his day in the seventh frame, lifting a shot to straightaway left to complete the hat trick. Dan Hicks and Adam Marquit had three hits apiece as well for Bowdoin.

Gorman's performance overshadowed a strong effort by Bowdoin starter Christian Martin, who improved to 4-1, with six innings of two-hit ball and eight strikeouts. The first-year lefthander retired the final 14 batters he faced in the win. Connor Sullivan took the loss for the Mules after tossing five innings and allowed two earned runs. Richard Newton had two of Colby's three hits.

The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader in Waterville tomorrow. First pitch has been moved up to 9:00 a.m. as rain is expected later in the day.
