EXETER, N.H. - Jarrid Johnson scored the game-winning goal with 36 seconds remaining to lead the Springfield College men's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over Bowdoin on Wednesday evening at Exeter High School. The Pride (4-3) outscored the Polar Bears (2-4) 5-2 over the final 18:20 to rally for the victory, their first over Bowdoin since 2005, snapping a string of five-straight losses in the series.
Mike Delia scored four times and assisted on another goal for Springfield, who also received three goals and an assist from Johnson. Senior Owen Smith found his stride for Bowdoin, scoring a season-high four goals while Patrick Lawlor added a pair of scores and Billy Bergner chipped in a goal and two assists in the loss.
Down 7-3 late in the first half, Bowdoin rolled off six consecutive goals to assume a 9-7 lead with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter. Smith was unstoppable in the run, scoring three times to spark the rally. Springfield rebounded with a pair of man-up scores late in the period and regained the lead with 11 seconds left in the third on Delia's fourth goal of the contest.
The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter, with Bowdoin's Bergner knotting the score at 11 on a man-up goal with 4:45 left. After Johnson put Springfield ahead with 36 seconds left, Bowdoin was able to win the ensuing faceoff. A Franklin Reis shot in the closing seconds was stopped by Connor Nash to preserve the victory for Springfield.
Nash made 13 saves in the victory while Michael Bottinelli (seven goals, three saves) and Robert Burkhardt (five goals, nine saves) split time in net for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin won 14 of 25 faceoffs but converted on just one of five chances with the man advantage. The Pride converted on 2 of 3 and held a 43-38 edge in shots for the contest.
