BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team snapped a brief two-game losing streak with a convincing 5-1 win over Tufts on Friday evening at Watson Arena.
Five different players scored for the Polar Bears, who improve to 4-3-1 (2-2-1 NESCAC) while the Jumbos fall to 3-5-0 (2-3-0 NESCAC).
The lone goal of the opening period came off the stick of Rob MacGregor, who knocked home a rebound off the stick of Kyle Lockwood at 5:21 to give the hosts a 1-0 lead after one frame. Tufts took advantage of a pair of Bowdoin penalties early in the second period to even the score. On a 5x3 power play, Garrett Sider knocked home a loose puck in front at 3:03 to knot the game at 1-1.
Bowdoin answered after a five-minute major penalty against Tufts, scoring off a Tim McGarry chance from the right face-off circle at 9:40 of the second stanza. The Polar Bears took advantage of another power play later in the frame as Harry Matheson found the back of the net at 15:18 to give Bowdoin a 3-1 lead heading into the third.
Danny Palumbo gave Bowdoin a 4-1 lead with a rebound goal at 11:37 of the final frame and Robert Toczylowski made it 5-1 at 15:04, chasing Tufts netminder Scott Barchard. Bowdoin held a 37-20 edge in shots for the game. Barchand stopped 31 shots in 55:04 before giving way to Brian Phillips, who stopped one shot in the final 4:56.
Steve Messina made 19 saves in the win for Bowdoin. Colin Downey and Jordan Lalor each had a pair of assists for the Polar Bears.
