BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team earned its first win of the season in explosive fashion, taking a 10-2 win over the University of New England on Tuesday evening at Watson Arena.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-1-1 this season while the Nor'easters fall to 1-4-0.
Bowdoin scored four times in the first 15:10 of the contest and added three goals in both the second and third periods to cruise to the win. It marks the first time since November of 2008 that the Polar Bears have scored 10 goals in a game.
Tim McGarry and Kyle Lockwood each had two goals and an assist to pace the scoring for Bowdoin. Jordan Lalor also scored twice while Daniel Weiniger, Ryan Collier, Graham Sisson and Erik Olson accounted for the other Bowdoin goals. First-years Donald Chute, Danny Palumbo and Tim Coffey each had two assists.
Tyler Fleurent and Mike Chase scored for the Nor'easters. Zach Lokey added a pair of assists.
Steve Messina earned the win in net for Bowdoin, stopping 16 shots and allowing a goal in 45:45 before giving way to Connor Shannon, who stopped six shots and permitted a goal in the final 14:15. Ian Edwards made 17 saves and allowed six goals in 30:19 before Craig Ryan entered to make six saves and permit four goals in 29:41.
Bowdoin scored a power play goal and added two shorthanded tallies in the win. The Polar Bears held a 33-24 lead in shots.
