Polar Bears Stun Williams With Two Late Goals To Earn Season-Opening Tie

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team scored twice in a 1:04 span late in the third period to earn a 3-3 tie at Williams in its season-opener on Saturday evening.

The Polar Bears, currently ranked 10th in the latest USCHO.com Division III poll, trailed 3-1 midway through the third period after David Jarrett scored with 12:04 remaining. Williams was then able to kill off three Bowdoin power plays and seemed en route to a season-opening victory.

After pulling goaltender Steve Messina for an extra attacker, Bowdoin stunned the Ephs by winning a a late faceoff and throwing the puck on net. Williams goaltender Ryan Purdy made the initial save, but Daniel Weiniger snuck the puck past him on a rebound attempt to narrow the deficit to 3-2 with 2:21 remaining. Just over a minute later, Bowdoin struck again. Creating another rebound opportunity, Robert Toczylowski was able to corral the puck in front of Purdy and sneak it by his left pad for the equalizing goal.

The Polar Bears garnered a power play in overtime but could not net the game-winner. Messina stopped 25 shots in the deadlock. Purdy made 35 saves for the Ephs. Rookie Ryan Collier's first career tally accounted for Bowdoin's first goal of the night in the opening period.

Bowdoin will travel to play at Middlebury on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
