Amherst Deals Bowdoin Second Straight Setback to Open Season

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College football team took advantage of four second-half Bowdoin turnovers in a 20-3 win in sloppy conditions at Pratt Field on Saturday. The Jeffs improve to 2-0 this season while the Polar Bears fall to 0-2 on the year.

The Jeffs accumulated 199 yards of rushing offense, including 134 from Eric Bunker, while the Polar Bears were led by 75 yards from Zach Donnarumma. The two teams combined for a total of 175 passing on the afternoon, but Amherst was able to pick off three Bowdoin passes, two of which directlyled to 10 Amherst points.

The teams battled for field position for the entire opening quarter as the first five possessions resulted in punts. After the Jeffs missed a field goal early in the second period, Bowdoin mounted its most impressive drive of the day, going 72 yards on 15 plays to the Amherst 3. Jimmy Garvey nailed a 20-yard field goal to give Bowdoin the first points of the game. The Jeffs answered immediately with a 69-yard, 11-play drive that saw Bunker dive the final two yards to paydirt for a 7-3 halftime lead.

Bowdoin seemed to get a break early in the second half as an Amherst drive was cut short by a Bunker fumble at the Polar Bear 28, caused by Griffin Cardew and recovered by Denzel McLarty. But, on the very next play, Grant White's pass was intercepted by Amherst, who converted a 20-yard field goal moments later for a 10-3 advantage. Matt Rawson converted another field goal later in the third period as the Jeffs held a 13-3 lead heading to the final quarter.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, White was picked off again and Amherst's Kevin Heller returned the interception to the Bowdoin 4. Mike Samela covered the final four yards on the next play to give the Jeffs a 20-3 lead for the final score of the contest.

White finished 13-23 for 73 yards for Bowdoin, with five passes each going to Pat Noone (26 yards) and Sean O'Malley (25 yards). Cardew led Bowdoin with 10 tackles and a forced fumble while David Nurse added 10 tackles, a stop for a loss and a pass breakup.

Bowdoin will look for its first win of the season next Saturday as they travel to Tufts University.
