ORONO, Maine - The Bowdoin College swimming and diving teams posted impressive showings in a non-scoring meet at the University of Maine-Orono on Saturday. The Polar Bears collected first-place finishes in 18 of the competition's 34 events.
The Bowdoin men won 13 events, led by three victories from Ryan Peabody. The first-year claimed wins in the 400 IM (4:21.67), 100 backstroke (58.25) and 200 IM (2:03.95) for Bowdoin. Nathan Mecray earned a pair of wins in the 50 breaststroke (26.89) and 100 breastroke (59.36), as did Linc Rhodes in the 200 butterfly (2:01.16) and 500 freestyle (5:00.25). Also taking first-place showings were David Wells (1:49.92 in 200 free), E.J. Googins (22.90 in 50 free), Mac Routh (53.32 in 100 butterfly) and Chris Granata (10:31.78 in the 1650 free). The Polar Bears also finished first in the 200 free relay (1:29.16 by Routh, Mecray, Rhodes and Wells) and the 200 medley relay (1:38.03 by Basyl Stuyvesant, Mecray, Routh and Googins).
On the women's side, the Polar Bears took five individual wins. Emma Pyle in the 100 backstroke (1:05.62), Caitlin Callahan in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.30), Allen Garner in the 200 IM (2:16.63), Lauren Varnell in the 50 breaststroke (32.11) and Caitlin Hutchinson‑Maddox in the 500 freestyle (5:28.61) all took victories.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday at Colby College against Wesleyan and Trinity.
