BRUNSWICK, Maine - Daniel Weiniger recorded a hat trick to lead the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team to an 8-0 victory over the University of New England on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar Bears, ranked fourth in the latest USCHO.com national poll, improve to 10-2-0 (7-2-0 NESCAC) while the Nor'easters dip to 2-11-0 (0-9-0 ECAC East).

Kyle Shearer-Hardy tied a school record with five assists in the win while Weiniger added a pair of assists to go with his second career hat trick. Jeff Fanning also had two goals and an assist for Bowdoin, who got their first shutout performance in goal this season courtesy of 20 saves from Steve Messina.

The Polar Bears out-shot the Nor'easters 18-6 in the opening period and carried a 3-0 lead into the second frame. Fanning got the Polar Bears going at 8:57, taking a back-handed feed from Shearer-Hardy and slipping the puck past UNE's Mike Roper for a 1-0 lead. Forty seconds later, after a UNE penalty, Weiniger snapped a shot top-shelf from between the circles to give Bowdoin a two-goal edge. Weiniger then fed Reich on the doorstep with 1:34 left before intermission to give the home team a three-goal edge at the break.

Colin Downey and Weiniger added power play goals late in the second frame for Bowdoin before Weiniger completed the hat trick just 30 seconds into the third period. Fanning added a power play goal and Erik Bertin notched his second career tally with 22 seconds left to round out the scoring.

Mike Roper made 38 saves in net for UNE, who were called for 14 penalties on the night. The Polar Bears took advantage with the extra man, scoring five times on the power play.
