GORHAM, Maine - The Bowdoin College field hockey team, ranked
seventh in the latest Division III poll released on Tuesday,
remained unbeaten with a 3-0 road win at the University of Southern
Maine. The Polar Bears (4-0) have outscored their opponents 17-1 in
their last three outings. The Huskies fall to 3-5 overall this
season.
Bringing its high-powered offense that has averaged six goals per
game this fall, Bowdoin broke open a scoreless game in the first
half netting two goals in a span of 31 seconds to secure the win.
Katie Herter notched Bowdoin's first goal of the game by
slotting in an unassisted strike off of a rebound at the 16:17
mark. Bowdoin's second goal came on a solo blast from
sophomore midfielder Kassey Matoin 16:48 into the half.
The Huskies played solid defensively in the second half and were
able to keep Bowdoin at bay until the final 20 seconds of
regulation when Herter scored her team-leading eighth goal of the
season off of an assist from senior midfielder Phoebe McCarthy.
Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy played well in
goal making nine saves on 13 shots on goal. Bowdoin goalkeepers
senior Emily Neilson and sophomore Kayla Lessard split time
evenly. Neither player recorded a save as Bowdoin held a
distinct 20-1 advantage in shots.
Bowdoin extended their lead in their all-time series against
Southern Maine to 30-6-4. The Polar Bears have won eight straight
against the Huskies and have not allowed a goal to USM since 2003.
Bowdoin will return to action this Saturday with a key NESCAC game
at 10th-ranked Middlebury.
