BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's volleyball team
opened their 2010 campaign with a split at the Endicott
Invitational on Friday night. The Polar Bears lost their opener to
Plymouth State before rallying for a dramatic win over MIT in the
nightcap. Bowdoin will continue play on Saturday against Salve
Regina at Endicott.
Plymouth proved too much for Bowdoin in the first match of the
season, taking a 3-1 win (25-15, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22). Melissa Haskell led the Bowdoin attack with 10 kills and 16 digs. Kristin Hanczor pitched in seven kills and four block assists for the Polar
Bears, who received 17 assists from Margot Roux and 16 from
Stephanie Bond.
MIT put Bowdoin in an early 2-0 hole in the second match of the
night, but the Polar Bears posted a stunning rally to salvage a 3-2
victory (21-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-6). Haskell again led the
way with 13 kills and 22 digs for the Polar Bears. Hanczor posted a
dozen kills while Ellie Brennan and Hillary Cederna had 10 kills
apiece in the win. Cederna also pitched in 15 digs while Jillian Berkman had a team-high 26. Stephanie Drumright notched four aces
for Bowdoin, who received 36 assists from Bond.
