AMHERST, Mass. - The fifth-seeded Trinity College men's
tennis team avenged an early-season loss to Bowdoin, taking a 5-2
win over the Polar Bears on day one of the 2010 NESCAC Tennis
Championships at Amherst College. The Bantams (13-5) advance to
tomorrow's tournament semifinal where they will take on the
top-seeded Panthers of Middlebury College. Bowdoin (10-6) will hope
to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when pairings are
announced.
In doubles play, the Bantams pulled out jumped out to a 2-1 lead
with wins at both number one and two. In the top spot, Trinity
earned an 8-3 win from Spencer Feldman and Anson McCook, while
teammates Rich Bonfiglio and Dan Couzens won 8-5 at number two. The
Polar Bears were able to avoid the sweep with a tiebreaker win at
number three from Casey Grindon and Tyler Anderson. The Bowdoin
pair edged Badid Dessau and Charles MCConnell from Trinity 9-8
(7-2).
Bowdoin won just one of the first three singles matches to finish,
with that coming via a 6-2, 6-3 result from Grindon at number five.
While Grindon pulled off the win over McConnell from Trinity,
Bantam teammates McCook and Bonfiglio won in straight sets at
numbers two and three. McCook topped Nicholas Fenichell 6-0, 6-3,
while Bonfilgio topped Tyler Anderson 7-5, 6-0.
The decisive fifth point was earned in come-from-behind fashion by
Dan Couzens of Trinity in the number four bout. After dropping the
first set 3-6 to Jamie Neeley, Couzens pulled out 6-3 and 6-4
results in the second and third frames to close out the match for
the Bantams.
