BRUNSWICK, Maine - Anthony Pisani lofted a two-out, two-run
single to left field to give the University of Southern Maine a 4-3
win over Bowdoin in a non-conference baseball game played Tuesday
afternoon at Pickard Field. The Huskies snap a five-game winless
streak to improve to 18-17-1. Bowdoin falls to 23-13 with the
setback.
Tied at two in the fifth inning, consecutive doubles by Nick Tom
and Brendan Garner gave the home team a 3-2 lead entering the late
innings.Six Bowdoin relievers were able to keep Southern Maine
scoreless for the middle six innings before the Huskies mounted
their game-winning rally in the top of the ninth.
David Ricker led off the inning with a single and Zach Fernandes
walked with no outs. After a popped bunt attempt and fly ball moved
Ricker to third, pinch-runner Matt Foye stole second base. Pisani
chipped a single over shortstop to bring home both runners and give
Southern Maine the lead.
Dustin Stanton got out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth by
striking out the final two batters to earn the save. Grey Goodrich
got the win for the Huskies with one inning of scoreless relief.
Ben Higgins took the loss for Bowdoin.
Pisani and John Carey led the Huskies with two hits apiece. Brendan
Garner and Brett Gorman had two hits each for the Polar Bears.
