HARTFORD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College baseball team split a
doubleheader at Trinity on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one
5-3 before rebounding to win the pivotal nightcap, 4-1. With the
win, the Polar Bears win the season series from the Bantams, 2-1,
and improve to 15-4 this season. Trinity entered the weekend ranked
first in New England and fourth in Division III while the Polar
Bears stand fourth in the latest New England poll.
With the series win, Bowdoin becomes the first team to take a
NESCAC series against Trinity since 2007, when both Tufts and
Bowdoin took their three-game league sets from the Bantams.
Jordan Edgett led the Polar Bear offense with four hits on the
afternoon, while rookie pitcher Oliver Van Zant dominated on the
mound in Bowdoin's game two victory, striking out 11 and allowing
one earned run and just five hits.
Trinity used a four-run third inning to take a 5-0 lead in the
eventual 5-3 game-one victory. Bantam 3B Stephen Rogers went
2-for-3 with an RBI single during a three-run third frame while
Alex Almeida added a two-run double. James Ramsey withstood six
walks and allowed four hits and three runs in 6.1 innings to take a
win on the mound for the Bantams in the first game, while classmate
Edward Donovan struck out one of the two batters he faced for a
two-out save. Carter Butland went the distance for Bowdoin, and was
victimized by an error, allowing just one earned run and striking
out four.
With Van Zant cruising in game two, Bowdoin scored four times in
the top of the fifth to seal the win. After an RBI double by Adam
Marquit and run-scoring single from Reid Auger, Dan Hicks delivered
the big blow, blasting a two-run home run to give Van Zant all the
support he would need. Brendan Garner, Joe Comizio and Edgett all
had two hits for the Polar Bears.
