BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University baseball team clinched
first place in the NESCAC Eastern Division and hosting rights for
the 2010 NESCAC Championship in a doubleheader split with Bowdoin
on Saturday. The Jumbos (21-4, 9-2 NESCAC) won the opener, 7-5, to
seal first place before Bowdoin (21-10, 4-5 NESCAC) claimed the
nightcap, 12-4.
Tied at five apiece entering the sixth inning of game one, Tufts
scored a pair of runs to take the lead. Alex Perry led off with a
double and came home on Frank Petroskey's two-bagger to give the
Jumbos a 6-5 lead. After moving to third on a groundout, Petroskey
scampered home on an Ian Goldberg groundout to push the lead to
7-5. Reliever Ed Bernstein took it from there, tossing 2.2 innings
of scoreless ball for the win.
Matt Collins reached base four times for Tufts and scored two
runs. Sam Sager and Chase Rose also collected a pair of hits. Brett
Gorman led Bowdoin with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored in
the loss as Brendan Garner also collected a pair of hits and a
stolen base.
The Bowdoin bats came alive in game two, as the Polar Bears
blasted three home runs to take the 12-4 victory. Matt Ruane, Joe
Comizio and Adam Marquit all had round-trippers for Bowdoin, who
got two hits and three runs scored each from Brendan Garner and
Brett Gorman.
Carter Butland took care of the rest by tossing 8.0 innings,
scattering nine hits and allowing no earned runs in the win. Corey
Pontes reached base four times for the Jumbos as pitcher Dave Ryan
took the loss after allowing three earned runs in 2.1 frames.
