HARTFORD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College baseball team continued
the program's best-ever start with a 9-7 win over 4th-ranked
Trinity in 10 innings on Friday. The Polar Bears improve to 14-3
(1-0 NESCAC) and snap a six-game losing streak to the Bantams
dating back to 2007. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday
in Hartford beginning at noon.
Bowdoin junior OF Brendan Garner opened the 10th inning with a
walk, stole second base, and scored on a single by Brett Gorman to
give the visitors a 6-5 lead. The Polar Bears added three
more runs in the frame on an RBI double by freshman DH Dan Findley,
the fifth Trinity error of the game, and an RBI single by senior
captain C Reid Auger. Trinity answered in the bottom of the
10th frame, as senior OF Jack Abbott drew a leadoff walk and scored
on a two-out double by classmate James Wood. Freshman Corey
Jensen singled home Wood, but Bowdoin senior captain RHP Joe Pace
got the next batter to pop out and end the game. Pace worked
3.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts to record the
victory.
Trinity had turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead in the bottom of
the seventh inning on a three-run blast to left-center field by
Wood, but Bowdoin responded with two runs in the eighth inning on a
two-out, two-run double by junior OF Joe Comizio to go back ahead,
5-4. Trinity forced the extra inning in the top of the ninth
frame on a leadoff double by Jensen an RBI single by freshman 3B
Stephen Rogers.
Starter Tim Welch got a no-decision for the Polar Bears by going
6.1 innings and scattering 10 hits with three earned runs. Garner
had two hits and three runs scored to lead Bowdoin.
The Trinity offense managed 15 hits, led by three for senior
CF Matt Sullivan, but left 14 runners stranded.
