WATERVILLE, Maine - Brett Gorman homered to tie the game and Dan
Hicks had an RBI single to bring in the game-winning run in the
seventh inning as Bowdoin College came from behind for a 7-5 win
over Colby College in NESCAC East baseball Friday at Coombs
Field.
Bowdoin (20-5, 3-1 NESCAC) reaches the 20-win plateau for the
second-straight season and fifth time in program history, with all
five seasons coming under head coach Mike Connolly. Colby falls to
9-10 overall and 0-7 in the league. The two teams are scheduled to
play a doubleheader at Bowdoin on Saturday at noon.
Colby held a 5-3 lead after three innings after scoring two runs
in the second inning thanks to a two-run single by Nick Ruocco.
Bowdoin had single runs in the first and second innings without the
benefit of a base hit. The Polar Bears used one hit batter, two
walks, and a Colby error to score one in the first. Bowdoin used
two hit batters, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly by Reid
Auger to get the second inning run.
Bowdoin took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single
by Kevin Zikaras, but Colby's Brendan Gallagher ripped a
two-run triple in the bottom of the third and Nikolas Atsalis had
an RBI single as the Mules took a 5-3 lead. The Polar Bears once
again scored a run without a hit in the fourth inning thanks to a
leadoff walk by Adam Marquit. He reached third bases on two
consecutive outs and then scored on a Colby wild pitch.
After taking the lead in the seventh, Bowdoin added an insurance
run in the eighth when Marquit scored his second run of the game on
an RBI from Brendan Garner on a fielder's choice. Dan Findley
had one hit and a pair of walks for Bowdoin. Marquit finished with
three walks and had a sacrifice bunt, while Hicks had one hit, a
walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Zikaras finished with one hit, one
