KEENE, N.H. - Bowdoin College men's lacrosse coach Tom McCabe
became just the 17th coach in Division III history to reach 200
wins, earning the milestone in a 17-10 Polar Bear win over Keene
State College on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears snap a three-game
losing skid and improve to 2-3 this season while the Owls fall to
2-4.
With the victory, Bowdoin College becomes the only school in
Division III history to boast a pair of 200-win coaches, as McCabe
joins former coach Mort LaPointe (218 wins, 1970-'90).
Junior Russell Halliday tallied three goals and two assists while
freshman Billy Bergner scored three goals to lead Bowdoin. After
falling behind 1-0, Bowdoin ripped off six straight goals to take
command of the game. Six different players scored in the run and,
after permitting another goal to open the second period, the Polar
Bears rolled off five unanswered to up their lead to 11-2. Keene
State could get no closer than seven goals for the remainder.
Robert Burkhardt and Chris Williamson each played a half in goal
for the Polar Bears. Burkhadt made one save (three goals) and
Williamson (seven goals) stopped six shots between the pipes.
In his 20th season, McCabe has record 200 wins against 108 losses
(.649) in his career. Under his direction, the Polar Bears won two
ECAC Championships (1993, 2001) and earned their first-ever NCAA
appearance and tournament win in 2008.
