BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's
basketball team pulled away from Wesleyan in the second half of a
80-52 victory over Wesleyan University on Friday night at Morrell
Gymnasium. The Polar Bears improve to 18-5 (4-4 NESCAC) with the
win while the Cardinals fall to 8-13 (2-6 NESCAC).
Bowdoin jumped out to a 10-0 lead thanks to a pair of Sabrina Cote
three-pointers. The Polar Bears maintained at least a nine point
lead for the majority of the period until an Erin Gold trifecta
from the wing highlighted a 7-0 spurt by the Cardinals that drew
the visitors to within four points, 30-26, with five minutes left
in the half. But Bowdoin was able to push the lead back up to eight
points at the break, thanks to 10 first-half points from Leah
Rubega and take a 38-30 edge into intermission.
The Polar Bears slowly pulled away from the Cardinals in the second
half, using a 9-2 run to push the lead to 18 points after a Caitlin
Hynes jumper with 10:30 left, 55-37. A 13-2 surge later in the
frame put the game on ice, as Bowdoin shot 62% from the field in
the second half en route to the win.
Four Bowdoin players saw double figures, led by Rubega's 16
on 7-8 shooting from the field. Amy Hackett and Cote added 15
points apiece for the Polar Bears while Caitlin Hynes dropped in 14
with a team-high eight rebounds. Sam LaCroce was the lone Cardinal
in double figures with 10 points.
Bowdoin leads the all-time series with Wesleyan 25-4. With
Friday's win, Bowdoin has secured the fifth seed for the
upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Depending on Saturday's result,
Wesleyan could be seventh, eighth or ninth in the final conference
standings.
