Swimming Teams Open With Split Decision at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a season-opening meet at MIT on Saturday. The Polar Bears both defeated Babson while dropping to nationally-ranked MIT.

The men's squad handled Babson 176-112 but fell to MIT 217-77. The women's team beat the Beavers 203-79 but lost to the Engineers 228-70.

Individual winners for Bowdoin included Allen Garner in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:08.94) and Basyl Stuyvesant in the 100 backstroke (53.60). The Polar Bears had several runner-up showings, including Stuyvesant (200 backstroke, 1:57.16), Caitlin Callahan (100 breaststroke, 1:10.19), Zach Perez (100 breaststroke, 1:03.93 and 200 breaststroke, 2:19.77), Allison Palmer (50 free, 25.26 and 100 free, 55.71) and Nathan Mecray (50 free, 21.23).

The women's 400 free relay team of Kaley Kokomoor, Garner, Christine Rholl and Palmer also took a second-place finish (3:45.50).
