BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin head coach Nicky Pearson won her
200th game as head coach of the Polar Bear field hockey team,
defeating the University of Maine-Farmington 9-0 on Wednesday
night. The Polar Bears, ranked sixth in the latest Division III
National Poll, improve to 7-0 this season and have not allowed a
goal since September 18. The Beavers fall to 8-2 this season with
the loss.
Already the winningest coach in program history, Pearson is
200-45 (.816) in her 15th season at the helm of the Polar Bears.
Among active coaches across all divisions of the NCAA, Pearson's
winning percentage ranks fourth overall.
The Polar Bears wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on a
rainy, windy evening in Brunswick. Katie Herter split several
Farmington defenders and fed a pass to Cathleen Smith on the back
post for a one-goal lead at 1:54. Less than six minutes later,
Bowdoin earned a penalty shot after a Farmington foul on the
goalline. Ingrid
Oelschlager rapped home a penalty stroke and then, later in the
half, dished to Ella
Curren for a blast from the right wing to make it 3-0 at the
break.
The Polar Bears exploded for six goals in the second half to put
the contest out of reach. Elizabeth Clegg scored twice
within a two minute span early in the second half before Katie Riley scored her third
goal of the season to increase the lead to 6-0. Molly Paduda's first career
goal came with under five minutes to go and Kassey Matoin rounded out the
scoring with a pair of tallies in the final three minutes.
Kayla Lessard made a
pair of saves to post the shutout for Bowdoin. The Polar Bears
extended their scoreless minutes streak to 308:18, dating back to
September 18 against Bates. Sarah Brown made eight saves in net for
Maine-Farmington.
