BRUNSWICK, Maine - The sixth-ranked Bowdoin College field hockey
team scored five goals in the first 27:14 en route to a 7-0 shutout
win over Wheaton (Mass.) College on Sunday afternoon at Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears remained unbeaten this year at 9-0 while the Lyons
suffer their second-straight loss and drop to 10-4 this season.
The Polar Bears got into the scoring column within the first six
minutes, as Ingrid
Oelschlager fed Liz Clegg ahead on a fast break. Clegg finished
from the right side of the circle to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead at
5:26. Cathleen Smith
deflected home a Katie
Herter shot less than a minute later, at 6:21, to double the
Polar Bear lead. Smith found Oelschlager in the 21st minute for a
slap shot inside the left post before Kassey Matoin and Katie Riley scored 1:07 apart
late in the half to give the hosts a five-goal lead at
intermission.
Ella Curren and
Matoin added second-half scores to seal the Bowdoin win. Kayla Lessard made one save
in net for the Polar Bears, who have posted six shutouts this
season. Ellie Massengill stopped 11 shots in net for the Lyons, who
are winless in their last 15 meetings with the Polar Bears dating
back to 1995.
