BRUNSWICK, Maine – Katie Bergeron put home the go-ahead
basket with 45 seconds remaining to give the Bowdoin College
women's basketball team a 53-52 victory over Trinity on
Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium. The 18th-ranked Polar
Bears improve to 15-4 (2-3 NESCAC) this season while the Bantams
fall to 14-5 (2-3 NESCAC).
Bowdoin struggled from the field in the first half, connecting on
just 26.7% of their shots, including 1-10 from three-point range
and the visiting Bantams took advantage, rolling off a 9-0 run,
sparked by five points from Claire Arnstein to take a 20-11
advantage midway through the period. The Bantams extended their
lead to double digits at the buzzer of the first half, when
Arnstein went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to give Trinity a 33-22
edge at intermission.
The Bantams quickly pushed the lead to 16 points with a 8-2 run out
of halftime. But Bowdoin upped the defensive pressure and started
to whittle away the Trinity advantage with eight points off Trinity
turnovers. Kaitlin Donahoe and Katie Bergeron nailed consecutive
three-pointers to cap a 12-0 Polar Bear run that trimmed the Bantam
lead to four points, 41-37, with 13:22 to play. The lead bounced
between three and six points for the next ten minutes, with Bowdoin
finally drawing to within a single point after a pair of Bergeron
free throws with 4:15 left, 50-49.
Trinity replied with a bucket from Molly McGlynn to push the lead
back to three points with 3:30 to go, 52-49. The teams went
scoreless for the next two minutes until Bowdoin's Caitlin
Hynes drove to the glass and put home a left-handed layup with 1:11
to play to bring the Polar Bears within a single point again.
Kaitlin Ciarlegio turned the ball over on Trinity's next
possession and Katie Bergeron gave Bowdoin their first lead since
3-2 when she drove down the right wing and banked home an
off-balance jumper with 45 seconds left. Arnstein's
desperation three-pointer at the buzzer sailed long as the Polar
Bears claimed their 14th straight win over the Bantams.
Bergeron scored a game-high 18 points while Hynes ended with 13
points and nine boards. Rubega netted 10 points for the Polar Bears
and grabbed 15 rebounds in the win. Trinity was led by
Arnstein's 14 points, although the senior captain went
scoreless in the second half for the visitors.
