BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Caitlin Hynes scored a game-high 22
points as the fourth-ranked Polar Bear women's basketball team
pulled away from Skidmore, 78-47, in a battle of unbeaten squads on
Saturday evening. The contest was the opener of the 2010 Coastal
Maine Classic. Bowdoin improves to 8-0 and is off to their best
start since the 2006-07 campaign while the Thoroughbreds (6-1) lose
their first game of the season.
Bowdoin blew open a close contest with a 25-4 run over the final
five minutes of the opening half and the start of the second
period. The hosts held a 21-20 lead before closing the stanza on a
13-2 spurt to carry a 34-22 edge into intermission. Bowdoin then
used a 12-2 run to start the second frame to put the contest out of
reach.
Hynes connected on 8-10 from the field to total her game-high 22
while also dishing out a team-high six assists. Leah Rubega and
Colleen Sweeney also totaled 13 points apiece for Bowdoin, who
assisted on 23 of their 29 baskets. Skidmore was led by 17 points
and six boards from Sharlyn Harper.
The Polar Bears held a 37-26 edge on the boards and forced 23
turnovers in the victory. The game was just the fifth meeting
between the two teams and the first since 1997. Bowdoin holds a 4-1
edge in the all-time series.
St. Joseph's 74, Salve Regina 58
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Four players scored in double figures to lead
the St. Joseph's College women's basketball team to a 74-58 victory
over Salve Regina in the nightcap of the 2010 Coastal Maine Classic
on Saturday at Bowdoin College. The Monks have won four of their
last five games and improve to 6-4 this season. The Seahawks have
lost four straight and stand at 4-5 this year.
After a tightly-played opening ten minutes, the Monks opened up
an 11-point lead thanks to a 9-0 run that featured seven points
from Allison Miner. St. Joseph's carried a 10-point lead into the
break, 32-22, and expanded their lead to as many as 20 points in
the second half. The Seahawks mounted a furious rally, thanks in
part to a pair of technical fouls against the St. Joseph's bench,
and used a 16-3 surge to draw within seven points with seven
minutes to play. Salve could get no closer, however, as the Monks
closed the game on a 17-8 run to seal the victory.
Meghan Daigle scored a game-high 18 points with eight rebounds
while Allie Parent notched 13 with 10 caroms. Carolyn Freeman and
Ashley Geel scored a dozen points apiece in the victory.

Regina at 4:00 p.m.
