BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Colby College women's basketball team
snapped a 19-game losing streak to Bowdoin, defeating the Polar
Bears for the first time since February of 2001 on
Saturday, 64-56. The Mules win the NESCAC opener for both squads,
improving to a program-best 11-1 (1-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears
fall to 12-2 (0-1).
Bowdoin carried a slim two-point lead into halftime and were
able to extend their advantage to as many as six points early in
the second stanza, but could not pull away from the Mules. Colby
tied the game on two occasions, and took their first lead of the
second half, 52-51, on a free throw from Rachael Mack with 7:47
remaining. Bowdoin regained the lead on their next possession as
Leah Rubega hit a spinning lay-in, but that proved to be the Polar
Bears' final lead of the game as the hosts went ice cold. The Polar
Bears went the next 5:03 without scoring while the Mules used an
8-0 run during that span to seal the win.
A balanced attack by Colby featured four players in double
figures, led by 13 apiece from Mack and Alison Cappelloni. Mack
also grabbed 10 rebounds as the Mules held a 38-33 edge on the
glass. Julianne Kowalski (10 points) and Samantha Allen (11) also
saw double figures for Colby, who survived 23 turnovers and held a
huge advantage at the free throw line. Colby connected on 17-24
attempts from the charity stripe compared to just 3-8 for the Polar
Bears.
Bowdoin was paced by Leah Rubega's 16 points and 13 rebounds while
Caitlin Hynes tossed in 14 points and blocked five shots. Bowdoin
struggled from long distance, only hitting 1-13 from three-point
range.
