BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
overcame 33% shooting for the game to outscore Hamilton College
27-15 over the final 13 minutes to pull away in a 59-47 victory on
Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears, who stand eighth in both the WBCA
and D3Hoops.com polls, improve to 12-1 this season. The
Continentals fall to 7-3 with the loss.
The Continentals led 23-19 at intermission as Bowdoin shot 18.5%
from the field in the opening period. Tied at 32 with 13:48 to go,
Nicole Coombes sparked a decisive Polar Bear run with a
hoop-and-harm at the 13 minute mark. Coombes netted a pair of free
throws and Katie Bergeron buried a three-pointer to give Bowdoin a
lead they would not relinquish.
The Polar Bears upped the defensive pressure and forced 11
second-half turnovers, scoring 15 points off the miscues, and
sealed the win with a 9-0 run that pushed their lead to 15 points
on a basket and free-throw from Caitlin Hynes with four minutes
remaining.
Hynes led all players with 18 points while Katie Bergeron finished
with 14 - 13 of which came in the second half. Leah Rubega scored
seven with 11 rebounds for Bowdoin, who held a 38-29 edge on the
glass. Coombes ended with eight points and five rebounds off the
bench for the Polar Bears.
Hamilton was led by 11 apiece from Alex Sowinski and Madie Harlem,
but committed 22 turnovers as a team and committed 21 fouls,
leading to 31 Bowdoin free throw attempts.
Bowdoin will return to action in Morrell Gymnasium this Saturday at
2:00 p.m. against Colby.
