BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin sophomore Nick Powell scored a pair of
goals to lead the Polar Bear men's soccer team to their first win
of the 2009 campaign, 3-1, over the University of Southern Maine on
Wednesday afternoon. The Polar Bears (1-1-0) avenge last year's
defeat at the hands of the Huskies, and own a 22-5-3 lead in the
all-time series against Southern Maine (2-3-0).
Bowdoin wasted little time getting on the board as a ball played
through the middle came to the toe of Eddie Jones, who one-touched
a perfectly-placed pass to Powell. Powell deposited the ball in the
lower right corner to give the hosts a 1-0 lead just 7:18 into the
contest. The Polar Bears owned an 8-1 edge in shots in the opening
stanza, but couldn't find the back of the net again until the 61st
minute, when Tim Prior broke in on USM goaltender David Kreps.
Prior drew Kreps out of position and found Powell in the middle for
an empty-net tally.
Southern Maine cut into the lead in the 74th minute, when Bowdoin
goaltender Dan Hicks fumbled the ball in the box. Husky freshman
Mohamed Mohamed put home the loose ball to make it 2-1 Polar Bears
with just 15 minutes remaining. Bowdoin got some much needed
insurance less than two minutes later, however, when Jones found
Prior, who tucked it into the lower-right corner to seal the
win.
Kreps ended with six saves on the game while Hicks finished with
three. Bowdoin will host Bates on Saturday in NESCAC action while
USM will travel to UMass-Boston in Little East action.
