WATERVILLE, Maine - The Bowdoin College baseball team completed
their season on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Colby by
scores of 15-7 and 6-5. The Polar Bears finish their year on a
six-game winning streak and post a record of 23-15, giving the 2009
squad the third-most victories in the history of the program.
Bowdoin has won 20 of their last 21 meetings with Colby dating back
to 2002.
Joe Pace took a victory in game one of the doubleheader,
improving to 7-0 this season. His seven wins tie the school's
single-season record and the junior right-hander posts the
best-ever winning percentage by a pitching in a single year in
program history with a minimum of four decisions.
Pace got some fine offensive support from Matt Ruane , who
smacked a two-run homer in the first inning and added another
two-run shot in the sixth. Reid Auger also had a solo homer for the
Polar Bears. Dan Hicks had four hits, while Joe Berte added two
hits and a pair of RBI. Ryan Conlon, one of five seniors playing
their final games for Colby, had two homers and four RBI. He had a
solo shot in the second inning and a three-run blast in the
seventh.
In the second game, Brendan Garner's single in the top of
the seventh inning brought in Nick Tom with the eventual
game-winning run. Hicks had led off with a pinch-hit single and Tom
took over on the bases.
Jason Koperniak and Kevin Zikaras both had solo homers for Bowdoin
in the second game. Zikaras had his in the first inning and
Koperniak led off the fifth inning with his shot. Adam Marquit,
Zikaras, and Garner all had two hits for Bowdoin. Carter Butland,
who entered the game in the sixth inning, earned the victory for
the Polar Bears.
