WATERVILLE, Maine - Carter Butland pitched a complete game in the
opener and Bowdoin College scored nine runs in the first two
innings of the second game to take a doubleheader sweep of Colby
College on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic
Conference East Division play.
Bowdoin has won 18 straight conference games against the Mules
dating back to 2002 and 18 of their last 19 against Colby
overall.
Butland got all the runs he would need when Bowdoin (15-12
overall, 3-3 NESCAC) scored three times in the first inning in a
3-2 win. The Polar Bears scored four times in the first and had
five more runs in the second in a 13-0 victory in the nightcap.
Dan Hicks smacked a two-run homer and Joe Berte had an RBI
groundout to get Bowdoin the runs in the opening inning of the
first game. The Polar Bears had just three hits in the opener,
including a double by Berte.
In the second game, Brendan Garner had a two-run single in the
first inning and Berte had an RBI single. Berte also had a two-run
single in the second inning. Kevin Zikaras went 3-for-3 and scored
three runs for Bowdoin. Auger also scored three runs.
Joe Pace worked five innings for the victory in the second game.
