WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Bowdoin College baseball team split a
twinbill with Amherst on Thursday, scoring three runs in the bottom
of the seventh to take game one, 5-4, but falling in game two by a
score of 15-8. The Polar Bears are 9-7 and will close out their
spring break trip to Florida with a doubleheader against Ramapo on
Friday.
Reid Auger continued his hot play, extending his career-best
hitting streak to 15 games with one hit in each contest. Down 4-2
in the final inning of game one, Brendan Garner led off the frame
with a single and moved to third on a single from Kevin Zikaras.
Jason Koperniak brought home Garner with a hit as Zikaras moved to
third. Joe Berte followed with a hit to score Zikaras and tie the
game and Matt Ruane drove home pinch-runner Ian Merry for the
game-winning RBI just one batter later. Sean Kleier (1 IP, 0 ER)
earned the win in relief following Joe Pace (5 IP, 4 ER, 6K) and
Eric Chenelle (1 IP 0 ER).
Amherst scored seven times in the second inning of game two to
chase Bowdoin starter Carter Butland and take a commanding 10-2
lead. The Polar Bears chipped away offensively, trimming the gap to
12-7, but could get no closer in a 15-8 defeat. Zikaras, Berte,
Ruane and Dan Hicks had two hits apiece for Bowdoin.
