BOX SCORE
AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst senior Brendan Powers scored a pair of
goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lead the 14th-ranked
Amherst men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 win over Bowdoin on
Saturday. Playing in their third-straight overtime game, the Polar
Bears dip to 9-9-2 this season. Amherst stands at 14-4-1.
Amherst scored the lone goal of the first period on the power
play, breaking the scoreless tie 11:44 into the frame. The Lord
Jeff goal came from Powers on a redirect of an Amherst shot. Early
in the second period, Amherst doubled its lead, once again on the
power play. Just before the midpoint of the frame, first-year Eddie
Effinger scored top-shelf to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Less than four minutes went by before Bowdoin was able to cut the
Jeffs' lead in half. The Polar Bear goal came on the end of a
nice passing sequence as Kyle Shearer-Hardy finished off helpers
from Jordan Lalor and Ryan Blossom.
The Polar Bears tied the game at 2-2 just 1:50 into the third
period, as Mitch Dillon put home the rebound off a Owen Smith shot.
Half of the final period went by before Amherst was able to
respond, as rookie Mike Baran riffled a slap shot from the blue
line to score with 7:30 to play.
With just 2:20 to play, Bowdoin caught an amazing break to deny
Amherst the win in regulation. Mike Corbelle hammered the puck into
the Amherst defensive zone, and as Amherst goaltender Cole Anderson
went to the corner to take control of the puck, it took a kick off
the seam between two sections of the glass. With Anderson
helplessly out of the crease, the puck took a straight line into
the Jeff net to tie the game 3-3.
The two NESCAC rivals headed into overtime, where Amherst wasted
little time. Just 49 seconds into the extra session, Powers struck
again on assists from Colp and Landers. At game's end,
Anderson finished with 44 saves for the Lord Jeffs, while Richard
Nerland made 48 saves for the Polar Bears.
