CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Bowdoin College women's squash team
finished 12th in the nation, going 1-2 at the Kurtz Cup National
Tournament last weekend. The Polar Bears defeated Middlebury in the
opening round before falling to Brown in the semifinals and
dropping to Mount Holyoke in the consolation round. Bowdoin
finishes their season with a record of 15-9.
The Polar Bears cruised past Middlebury for the third time this
season, capturing the top six positions on Friday night. Elena
Laird and Lauren Gesswein swept the top two positions while Kate
Gormley earned a 3-1 win at number three. Alex Franchesci, Biz
Gillespie and Lizzy Warner all earned 3-0 victories at spots four
through six to clinch the victory.
Bowdoin dropped their semifinal match to Brown, 8-1, on
Saturday. Lauren Gesswein took a 3-0 victory at the number two
position to earn the Polar Bears' lone point. Kate Gormley and Alex
Franchesci both lost close 3-2 decisions at number three and four
for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears closed out the weekend by falling to Mount
Holyoke in the consolation round, 7-2 on Sunday. Alex Franchesci
took a 3-0 victory at the number four position while Lauren
Gesswein picked up a 3-2 decision at number two. Kate Gormley and
Biz Gillespie each lost closely-fought five-game matches.
