NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team
secured the top seed for the NESCAC Women's Basketball Championship
with a 76-59 victory over Connecticut College on Saturday
afternoon. The Polar Bears (20-4, 8-1) will host eighth-seeded
Williams in a quarterfinal contest next Saturday, February 21. Leah
Rubega posted a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds to
pace Bowdoin to victory.
Rubega had eight points and eight rebounds in the first half of
play and the visitors enjoyed a 28-to-18 advantage on the
backboards in the frame. Cote knocked down a jumper with 38 seconds
left that vaulted the Polar Bears out to a 40-26 lead at the
intermission. Bowdoin continued to carry a double digit lead for
most of the second stanza. But the Camels reeled off consecutive
field goals late in the half that cut the deficit to nine points.
Cummings knocked down a jumper and Jacqueline Shinall banked in a
runner with 4:55 remaining to make it a 64-55 ballgame. But that
was as close as the Camels would get to the Polar Bears as Bowdoin
closed out the contest on a 10-2 run over the final four
minutes.
Caitlin Hynes netted 14 points for the Polar Bears, who earned
their sixth consecutive win. Sabrina Cote and Jill Henrikson
contributed 10 points apiece for the visitors. Connecticut College
junior Emily Cummings had 14 points and seven rebounds in the
season-ending setback.
