WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College men's ice hockey team skated
to a 3-0 lead and held off a late Bowdoin rally to deal the Polar
Bears their first loss of the season in a 4-2 setback at Alfond
Rink on Friday evening. The 10th-ranked Polar Bears fall to 5-1-0
this season while the Mules improve to 5-2-0. The teams will play
the non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Watson
Arena in Brunswick.
Bowdoin controlled the first ten minutes of the game, but Colby
struck first on a Billy Crinnion powerplay goal at 12:03 of the
opening frame. Mike Doherty added a tally two minutes later to give
the hosts a 2-0 lead after the first period of play. Jeff Jarnot
added a second-period tally to push the lead to 3-0 heading into
the third.
The Polar Bears swept aside a lengthy powerplay by Colby to start
the final stanza, and used the momentum to score a pair of goals.
First-year Robert Toczylowski found the back of the net at 8:27 and
Leland Fidler cut the lead to 3-2 with 7:05 remaining.
But Colby's Wil Hartigan stymied the Polar Bears with a goal from
between the circles with just over five minutes left to push the
lead back to two goals and seal the win.
Cody McKinney made 36 saves in the victory for Colby, who are 3-0-1
in their last four home games in the rivalry. Richard Nerland
stopped 23 shots for the Polar Bears, who now own a 98-85-8 lead in
the all-time series against the Mules.
