BOX SCORE
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Bowdoin first-year Daniel Weiniger
scored two goals and sophomore Jordan Lalor netted the game-winner
in overtime to cap off the Polar Bears' thrilling 3-2
comeback win over host Babson College in an ECAC East/NESCAC
contest at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon. With
the win, Bowdoin improved to 2-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in NESCAC
play, while the Beavers suffered their first loss to fall to 1-1-0
overall and 1-1-0 in the ECAC East.
After going 0-for-5 on powerplay opportunities the night before,
Babson converted two of its four extra-man chances in the opening
period. The first came at 5:43, as senior Casey Fazekas sent a pass
from behind the net to first-year PT Donato, who ripped a shot from
the left circle past Bowdoin senior goalie Chris Rossi for the
first goal of his collegiate career. The Beavers then made it 2-0
with another powerplay score less than four minutes later, as
junior Terry Woods gathered a rebound of senior Chris Wood's
shot and potted his first of the year at 9:25.
Trailing 2-0 after one, Bowdoin cut its deficit in half with a
powerplay goal of its own early in the second, when Weiniger
converted consecutive passes from senior Mike Corbelle and senior
captain Colin MacCormack at 0:55. It would remain 2-1 until late in
the third period, when Polar Bears' junior Kyle Shearer-Hardy
dug the puck out along the left boards and fired a centering pass
toward the net. Weiniger redirected it just inside the right post
for his second goal of the game at 18:11, tying the contest at
2-2.
Following a timeout with 1.8 seconds left in regulation, Babson
nearly pulled out the victory when senior assistant captain Jason
Schneider got an open look from the top of the left circle.
However, his wrister went just wide of the longside post as the
buzzer sounded and the contest went into overtime.
The Beavers had the first two scoring chances of the extra
session, but Fazekas' shot from the right point was saved by
Rossi and moments later Wood's effort from the slot went just
wide of the left post. Bowdoin then capitalized on its only scoring
opportunity of the session, as Lalor took a pass from first-year
Robert Toczulowski in front of the net and tucked an open shot into
the lower right corner for the game-winning goal at 1:55.
Rossi finished with 29 saves in the win for Bowdoin, while
sophomore Andrew Peabody also made 29 saves in net for Babson.
