WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team
jumped out to a 10-point lead just four minutes into the game and
never looked back in an 81-51 win over Fitchburg State in the
opening round of the Eastern Connecticut Tip-Off Tournament on
Friday evening. The Polar Bears (1-0) advance to play the host
Warriors in the championship tilt at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
Bowdoin led 15-5 just 3:35 into the contest and the Polar Bears
held a double-digit advantage for almost the entire first half,
thanks to 59.3% shooting from the field in the first stanza. An
11-0 surge shortly before intermission pushed the lead to 20 points
as the Polar Bears cruised in the second half.
Will Hanley led four players in double figures, scoring a
team-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds on 7-9 shooting.
Justin Nowell added a career-high 14 points off the bench for
Bowdoin while Ryan O'Connell (12 points) and Mark Phillips (11
points) also saw double-digits. Bowdoin's defense was outstanding,
holding the Rams to less than 30% shooting from the field and
holding a 37-26 edge on the boards.
