BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Katie Herter scored two goals and an
assist to lead the 12th-ranked Polar Bear field hockey team to a
5-1 win over Colby on Wednesday evening. Bowdoin improves to 7-2
(3-2 NESCAC) while Colby falls to 4-4 (1-4 NESCAC). The victory is
the fifth-straight by the Polar Bears over the Mules dating back to
2005.
Bowdoin got on track midway through the opening half, when a strike
from the top of the circle by Shavonne Lord was redirected in front
by Herter to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. McKenna Teague knocked home
a loose ball in front later in the half to give the Polar Bears a
2-0 advantage, but Colby responded with just 29 seconds left in the
period when Courtney Erskine backhanded a shot from the left wing
into the top corner to cut the edge to 2-1 at intermission.
The Polar Bears put the game away with three tallies in the second
half, as Herter set up Bowdoin's fourth goal with a nice run down
the middle of the field. Herter found Jessie Small on the wing for
a slapshot that slipped inside the left post to make it 4-1. Herter
and Elizabeth Clegg rounded out the scoring with late goals for
Bowdoin.
Emily Neilson stopped one shot in net for the Polar Bears, who
out-shot Colby 15-2 in the game. Liz Fontaine (two goals-against,
one save) and Casey Atwater (two goals-against, three saves) each
played a half in goal for Colby. Bowdoin leads the all-time series
against their rivals from Waterville, 29-11-2.
