NEW LONDON, Conn. –Trevor Prophet buried a direct kick
from 20 yards out with 6:22 remaining in the second overtime
session Saturday, lifting the Connecticut College men's soccer team
(5-1, 3-1) to their fourth straight victory, a 1-0 blanking of
Bowdoin (5-2, 3-2) Saturday. The Polar Bears failed to convert on a
goal despite out-shooting the hosts 19-8 in the match as the Camels
match their best start to a season since 1993.
Senior Mickey Lenzi was fouled on the play that led to the free
kick. Prophet put the game-away, rifling a rising shot into the
left corner of the goal. Prophet, the reigning conference player of
the week, has erupted with four goals and two assists in his past
four games.
The Polar Bears had their chances to win the game in regulation.
In the 81st minute of action, Alex Thomas launched a corner kick
across the scoring box. Sean Bishop was able to get a head on it
but the ball grazed the crossbar and sailed out of play. With 3:15
left, Martland was tested when Tim Prior was able to snap off a
nifty turnaround shot on the goal but the senior keeper made the
save to force the extra session. Additionally, Hunter Clark hit a
crossbar in the first half for Bowdoin.
Alex Martland posts his third shutout of the season in the
blanking. Dan Hicks made three saves for the Polar Bears.
