MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bowdoin College field hockey team lost a
shootout to Wesleyan University on Saturday, 3-2. The Polar Bears,
who received a pair of goals from Ella Curren, fall to the
Cardinals for the first time since 2004.
After the teams tied 2-2 through the first set of penalty
strokes, Wesleyan won the second round 2-0 for the victory.
Freshman Ashley McLaren scored on the first stroke for Wesleyan,
which shot first in the second period, and sophomore Liz Chabot
scored on Wesleyan's third for the 2-0 lead. Bowdoin failed
on its third stroke attempt, meaning the visitors had to score on
both of their remaining attempts, but Wesleyan freshman goalkeeper
Tori Redding stopped Bowdoin senior Kara Kelley on the Polar
Bears' fourth stroke to give Wesleyan the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Bowdoin jumped on the board 8:40 into
the second on a goal from sophomore Ella Curren, with senior
Shavonne Lord and sophomore Elizabeth Clegg assisting. Wesleyan
evened the score with just under 11 minutes left as sophomore
Morgan McCauley scored her team-leading sixth goal off a pass from
Chabot, but Bowdoin moved back in front on another tally from
Curren with 4:45 to play. McLaren, however, found the back of the
net with 2:20 remaining to send the game into overtime.
Bowdoin outshot Wesleyan 7-2 in the two overtime
periods—including a 4-0 margin in the final 15
minutes—but neither team could find the back of the net,
sending the game to penalty strokes. McLaren and McCauley scored in
the first set of penalty strokes for Wesleyan, while junior Ingrid
Oelschlager and sophomore Emily French scored for Bowdoin. Junior
goalie Emily Neilson made a stop on the final Wesleyan stroke of
the session to force the teams to a second series of strokes.
Bowdoin held a decided edge on the stat sheet, outshooting Wesleyan
23-8 and taking 19 penalty corners to Wesleyan's eight.
Redding made 18 saves in the Wesleyan net to keep the Cardinals in
the game and now has 69 saves in six NESCAC contests, including 62
in her last four. Neilson stopped three Wesleyan shots in the
Bowdoin cage.
